What I learned at Training Camp (as a WR Alum)

250 World Racers. 6 Squads. 10 Days.

And I got to be part of it!

A few weeks ago World Race training camp brought future Racers from around the USA (and even a few from other countries) to Georgia. Racers are excited to meet their squadmates, have a trial run with the items they plan to bring, and find out who will be on their team! These things are exciting, but Racers will find that training camp offers even more!

Throughout the week, Racers attend a variety of sessions taught by people in the Adventures in Missions community. Following a time of worship, teachings include topics such as Discipleship, Wellness, Identity, and Forgiveness.

A squad has opportunities to take on a variety of challenges together. I witnessed squads cheering each other on as they took on the challenge of hiking 2 miles in 35 minutes, and the joy that came when all crossed that finish line. The squad was presented with a variety of sleeping arrangements, simulating what they could experience on the Race. Incredible teamwork and leadership that was shown during this time.

I had the honor of being part of D Squad’s training camp experience. As a trainer, I got to spend 10 days with these incredible people! I learned with them, worshiped with them, had amazing conversations, and laughed often.

As I walked alongside this squad, I began to remember my training camp experience. Then memories of the time leading up to launch came to mind. And of course, I started to reminisce about my own World Race experience.

Throughout the week, there were several moments where I was able to impart what I learned from my experiences to this group of world changers. I had flashbacks to my training camp, where it was me who was listening to what a Race alum had to say about their experience. In these moments I was reminded of what the Lord has brought me through over the last couple of years and how He was now using me to call others to follow in the same direction.

Often when we think of leadership (myself included) we picture someone with crowds rallied around them, inspiring the masses. And sometimes it certainly looks this way.

Throughout the fall, leadership has had a different look for me. It has looked like late night  conversations around a campfire. It has looked like seeing potential in someone on a squad and helping find the perfect role for them on a squad. It has looked like hiking with an incredible group of men, sharing about the Race from a man’s perspective along the way. By being sensitive to the Holy Spirit about what to do in each moment, I was more than equipped to fill this role.

As you finish reading this blog, I want you to think about the experiences you have walked through in your life. The things unique to you. Just as I was able to walk with D Squad through their training camp experience, you have the ability to walk with the people in your life.

You’ll be amazed that by being you and by letting the Holy Spirit be your guide, your experiences will lead others into greatness.
